Intra-Oral Massage

Intra-Oral Massage

Intra-oral massage focuses on the muscles and tissues inside the mouth and face. Dentists and massage therapists often use this method to treat problems with the mouth and face muscles.

Benefits of Intra-Oral Massage:

  1. Relief of TMJ: providing relieve from discomfort in the jaw muscles for people with TMJ disorder by releasing tension in the jaw. This therapy can reduce pain, headaches and improve overall jaw mobility.
  2. Alleviates issues with Lockjaw by using trigger point massage therapy to release the muscles responsible for lockjaw.
  3. Reduces Teeth Grinding: Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can cause significant damage to the teeth and jaw. Intra-oral massage can help relax the muscles involved in grinding, reducing the frequency and intensity of teeth-grinding episodes.
  4. Improves Oral Health: Intra-oral massage can enhance blood circulation in the oral tissues, promoting healthier gums and teeth. It can also help release toxins and waste products from the mouth, improving overall oral hygiene.
  5. Alleviates Sinus Pressure: Intra-oral massage techniques can help relieve sinus pressure and congestion. By focusing on specific areas in the mouth, this treatment can stimulate the sinuses and help relieve sinus discomfort.

Intra-Oral Massage Techniques:

  1. Often the therapist will apply light pressure and circular movements on the face, jaw, and neck before beginning the mouth massage.
  2. Gloved finger massage: The therapist applies gentle pressure and various techniques to relieve tension and induce relaxation using circular kneading motions.
  3. Trigger Point Release: Intra-oral massage may also involve identifying and releasing trigger points. Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots in the muscles that can cause referred pain. The therapist can help alleviate pain and tension by applying pressure to these points.
  4. Stretching and Mobilization: Intra-oral massage may include stretching and mobilization techniques to improve jaw mobility and flexibility. The therapist may gently stretch the jaw muscles and guide the client through specific movements to enhance the range of motion.

It is important to note that intra-oral massage should only be performed by trained professionals who have been certified to perform these techniques. Bluestone Massage Therapist Craig Hoeffner holds intra-oral certification and has many hours performing these techniques. Several local dentists have recommended Craig.
